Dübendorf, June 24, 2009 – From flexibility to performance: HP expands its thin client portfolio and provides new solutions for thin clients: software solutions from Microsoft, and management solutions developed by HP in collaboration with Symantec and VMware.
The new models – the gt7720 Thin Client in the Performance Series, and HP t5630w and t5730w Thin Clients in the Flexible Series – are now available with Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard, the next generation of Windows XP Embedded. They also come with HP RDP Enhancements, an add-on to the Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) that ensures that multimedia applications are redirected to the client (multimedia redirection) and USB devices can be seamlessly integrated in virtualized Windows desktops (USB redirection).
The three models vary in terms of features and flexibility. The flagship HP gt7720 has an AMD Turion dual-core processor, 2 GB of RAM, and an ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics card with two DVI ports for use with graphics-intensive applications. The HP t5730w comes with an AMD Sempron processor and an ATI Radeon X1250 graphics card, but with the option of adding an expansion base and an extra graphics card. The HP t5630w, the entry model to the world of Windows Embedded Standard, features an energy-saving VIA Eden processor. The operating system for the three new thin clients is stored on a 2 GB flash memory.
The new thin clients also feature updated HP Remote Graphics Software (RGS) for full multimedia capability and enhanced real-time collaboration. In addition to the HP Device Manager and Altiris Deployment Solution, HP has added HP Client Automation to the management portfolio to enable easier management of access devices. This software enables the early prevention of problems, and automatic updates. The combination of new HP Thin Client hardware and software boosts productivity and maximizes user-friendliness.
The HP gt7720 will be available from the beginning of July for CHF 1,099, and the t5630w and t5730w models are already on sale for CHF 549 and CHF 749 respectively (recommended retail prices including VAT).
Functional and versatile
The new high-performance HP Thin Clients with Windows Embedded Standard offer users a familiar operating environment, with the new operating system including Internet Explorer 7, Windows Media Player 11, and Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) 6.1. RDP enables devices to be connected seamlessly, and harnesses the advantages of the new Windows Server 2008 functions, including the latest security and enterprise management technologies.
HP Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) Enhancements software is available as of now, both on HP Thin Clients with the new Microsoft Embedded Standard, and on HP Thin Clients with XP Embedded. Alongside multimedia and USB redirection, the software enables a near-desktop experience when working in VMware view environments. It also supports the latest VMware View Manager 3 Broker. With integrated multimedia redirection, users can run web applications, videos and other files very easily in virtual environments. Because applications are downloaded directly to the thin client, there are no synchronization problems when working with images, sound and video. This improves multimedia capabilities in real time and places less of a burden on servers. The HP RDP Enhancements software is ready for use immediately, and does not require additional training. By simply logging in on the thin client, users get to enjoy the advantages of multimedia functions such as video playback and USB support. Multimedia redirection is also supported in Windows Server environments.
HP and VMware are also working on a future version of VMware View Manager to enable the use of HP Remote Graphics Software (RGS). Team members at different locations will now have common access to visualizations such as 2D design, 3D solid modeling, rendering, simulation, full motion video, heavy flash animation, and Web 2.0. The software also provides expanded real-time collaboration functionality.
Practical management
The HP Thin Client Remote Management Portfolio provides customers with the right solution whatever their thin client management needs. The portfolio includes the preinstalled HP ThinState Tool, the free HP Device Manager for managing thin clients, plus the Altiris Deployment Solution and HP Client Automation for heterogeneous client environments. The new Windows Embedded Standard-based HP Thin Clients come equipped with the agent for HP Client Automation software. Thanks to this management software, administrators can run updates automatically, meaning that systems are always right up to date. This enterprise-wide client management solution allows customers to manage physical and virtual devices with a single solution.
